The church at the top of the steps
Trinità dei Monti stands above the Spanish Steps, on its own square at the top of the stairway. The church was consecrated in 1594, and works by Daniele da Volterra are part of its artistic setting. In front of the church stands an obelisk, and from the terrace the view runs back over the steps and Piazza di Spagna.
The church and the convent next to it are run on their own terms, not as part of the steps. Opening hours depend on the day, and visits stop during services. Plan the climb first and the church second.

Opening hours and services
Visits are suspended during services, so do not count on an uninterrupted visit within these hours.

Tours →Dress for the visit
The cloister visit, including the church, requires covered shoulders and knees. This is a rule for that visit. The steps outside have no dress code, but it is sensible to dress for a church if you plan to go in.
Entry to the church
Check at the door whether any fee applies on your day. The guided cloister visit has its own price, listed above.
The Obelisco Sallustiano
The obelisk stands in front of the church. It is red granite from the Roman imperial period, and its shaft is 13.91 m high. Descriptions of the whole monument differ: 15.21 m with the base and an inauguration on 20 April 1787, or 30.45 m with the base and an erection in 1789.
Getting up to the church
Stairs, lift and the walk onward.
The usual way is on foot up the Spanish Steps from Piazza di Spagna. A lift links the Metro Spagna entrance on Vicolo del Bottino with the exit at Trinità dei Monti, so it is an alternative to the stairs. The station has no lift to the platforms, and the lift is not guaranteed to be in service, so check before you plan around it.
From the square you can walk on along Viale di Villa Medici to the Pincio terrace. The walk is on the Pincian Hill page. For the history of the stairway you just climbed, see the history page, and Rome in one day helps you fit the church into a day in the city.
