Spanish Steps Tours Compared

You can see the Spanish Steps on your own, on a cloister visit or on a guided walk through the old town. This page compares the options and lists what to check before you book.

Three ways to see the steps with a plan

The Spanish Steps themselves are free and open to walk, so a tour is about context, not access. You can follow a fountain route on your own, book the guided visit of the cloister above the steps, or join a walk that links the steps with Trevi and the Pantheon.

Each option answers a different question. The fountain walk is a route and costs nothing. The cloister visit takes you inside Trinità dei Monti. A combined walk covers more ground in one go, and it is the option where prices, languages and group sizes differ most from one provider to the next.

The options in detail

What each one involves.

The fountain walk on your own

The route links Trinità dei Monti, the Spanish Steps, the Barcaccia, Via del Babuino and the Trevi Fountain. Start at the top for the view, walk down the steps and carry on. It needs no booking and no guide.

Walk to Trevi →

The cloister visit at Trinità dei Monti

Regular dates are in Italian on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 10:00 and on Saturday at 9:45 and 11:30, and in French on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9:00. Registration by email is required before you come. Bring covered shoulders and knees.

Trinità dei Monti →

Walks via Trevi and the Pantheon

These start in the old town and bring the steps into a longer route. The Trevi Fountain has its own access rule since February 2026, so ask whether the inner area is part of the booking. A walk that ends at the Pantheon takes more time than one that stays near the steps.

Walks beyond the steps

For the nearby square with the Fountain of the Four Rivers, see Piazza Navona. The route up to the terrace and the park is on the Pincian Hill page.

What to check before you book

The wording differs more than the prices do.

Meeting point and start time

Combined walks can start far from the steps. Check where and when you meet, and how long the walk takes.

What the price includes

Look for entry tickets, guide fees and the Trevi inner area. A walk that lists the Pantheon may cover only the walk past it. Do not assume that a free tour is free of charge. Read the booking terms.

Language and group size

The cloister visit has fixed languages and dates. For commercial walks, the listing shows the language and the group size, so compare them before you choose.

Stairs and access

The steps and the upper square are reached by stairs. Metro Spagna has no lift to the platforms, and a lift links the entrance on Vicolo del Bottino with the exit at Trinità dei Monti. Check that it works before you rely on it.

Cancellation

Terms differ by provider. Read them before you pay, especially for a date that depends on the weather.
