The walk up from the steps

The Pincian Hill, or Pincio, is the hill above the Spanish Steps. From the church of Trinità dei Monti, a path follows Viale di Villa Medici to the Passeggiata del Pincio. Further entrances lead from Piazza del Popolo and from Viale delle Magnolie, and a link runs on to Villa Borghese across the Muro Torto.

This makes the Pincio the natural continuation of a visit to the steps. You climb the staircase, pass the church and keep going, and within a few minutes you are on a terrace above the square below. The path is open to visitors, and no ticket is needed for the terrace. A weather or safety closure is possible, so check the day if the forecast is poor.

The view from the Pincio

The best-known viewpoint is the belvedere at Piazzale Napoleone I.

What you see

The terrace looks down on Piazza del Popolo. The dome of St Peter's is part of the panorama. Sunset is the time the viewpoint is usually recommended for.

When to go

Late in the afternoon, so you arrive with the sun going down. Clear sight lines are never guaranteed, since haze and cloud can hide the dome.

Best time to visit →

How long

Allow time for the view and a stroll along the promenade after the walk up from the steps. Add the park if you want a longer outing.

Villa Borghese: the park

Villa Borghese is the large park behind the Pincio. It is a park for walking, and a different thing from the Galleria Borghese, which is a museum with its own rules and tickets. A stroll in the park is not a gallery visit, and the gallery is not included in a walk on the grass.

The park suits a relaxed second half of the day after the climb. Take the link across the Muro Torto from the Pincio and walk on to the lake and its temple.

Galleria Borghese: tickets and hours 2026

The Galleria Borghese is the museum in the park. Reservation is required for every visit, even when entry itself is free. The base price and the reservation fee are two separate amounts.

TicketEntryWith reservation fee
Adult, full price€16€18
Adult, last time slot of the day€11€13
Aged 18 to 25 if eligible€2€4
Under 18FreeReservation still required

The reservation fee is normally €2. Children up to and including age 5 do not pay it. The reduced rate for ages 18 to 25 depends on nationality or residence conditions, and it runs until the day of the 25th birthday. A special exhibition can raise the price, so the numbers above are not a final price for every day.

Galleria Borghese: what to plan

Hours, time slots and rules at the door.

Opening hours

Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00, last entry at 17:45. The gallery is closed on Mondays, on 25 December and on 1 January.

Visit slots

A visit lasts 2 hours, and the last slot is shorter. Each slot admits a maximum of 180 people.

Free days

Reservation is needed on free days too, and the reservation fee normally applies. Tickets for those days are released 10 days ahead, and there are no last-minute tickets.

No skip-the-line ticket

The museum has no such entry type, so a product that uses the phrase does not give you a faster entry.

Bags

Only small bags up to 21 by 15 cm go into the museum. Larger items go to the cloakroom, and luggage storage is not guaranteed.

Getting there

Buses 910 and 92 stop at Pinciana, next to the museum. Neither stops at the Spanish Steps, so do not look for them there.
