The short answer

The Spanish Steps are open air and free to see, so there is no bad month, only different trade-offs. Spring and autumn give a comfortable temperature for walking. Summer is hotter and drier. Autumn is the wettest season in Rome. Late April to early May adds the azalea display on the Steps.

The time of day matters as much as the month. Try an early morning visit if you want photos with fewer people. Nobody can promise an empty staircase at any hour, so plan with that in mind.

The weather figures below are long-term monthly averages for Rome from 1981 to 2010. They show the pattern of the year for the city area, not a forecast for the day you travel.

Season by season

What each part of the year looks like at the Steps.

Spring: March to May

Highs rise from 14.1 °C in March to 21.9 °C in May, and rainfall falls from 79.7 mm in April to 56.7 mm in May. It is a good compromise for walking, but it is not guaranteed to be dry or quiet. The azaleas fall in this season.

Summer: June to August

Summer is the warmest and driest stretch, with highs of 26.0 to 29.6 °C. Rain is lowest in July at 23.2 mm. Go in the early morning or in the evening, and take water and a hat.

Autumn: September to November

September is still warm at 25.2 °C, but rainfall jumps to 76.2 mm. October reaches 107.2 mm and November 126.9 mm. Pack a light rain jacket and expect wet days.

Winter: December to February

Highs stay between 10.5 and 11.4 °C, with lows of 3.1 to 4.4 °C. December still has 100.8 mm of rain. Bring layers. The Christmas tree season falls at the start of this period.

Azaleas and Christmas on the Steps

Two seasonal events, with dates that change each year.

The azalea display

In spring the Steps are dressed with azaleas. The 2026 display was scheduled from 16 April to 17 May, with more than 200 plants, and it also reached Via dei Condotti. The actual flowering depends on the weather. If you want to be sure to see them, aim for 20 April to 10 May.

The dates are not the same every year. Check the programme for your travel year before you book.

Christmas

In the 2025/26 season the Steps carried a tree about 12 m tall. The event period ran from 26 November 2025 to 6 January 2026. Do not assume the same set-up for 2026/27. Check the programme in late autumn before you plan around a tree or a nativity scene.

Early morning

Early is the best planning tip for photos and a calmer walk. It does not guarantee an empty staircase, and the church and the museum open later.

Trinità dei Monti

The church is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10:15–19:45, Wednesday 12:00–19:45 and Sunday 09:00–19:30. Visits pause during services.

Keats-Shelley House

Open Monday to Saturday 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00, last entry 17:45. In the regular schedule it is closed on Sunday. Check holidays separately.

Sunset on the Pincio

The terrace above Piazza del Popolo is a popular place near sunset. The view depends on the sky and on the day.

If it rains

Keep the visit short and flexible.

Rain falls most from October to December. The Steps stay open air and have no roof, so a rainy day is a shorter visit. Combine a quick look at the Steps with an indoor stop, such as the Keats-Shelley House or the Galleria Borghese. The Galleria needs a reservation and is closed on Monday.

For the whole city in one day, including indoor stops, the sister guide Rome in one day is a good companion.
